San José with its 340,000 inhabitants (2017) is not a particularly exciting destination. There are very very few beautiful old buildings. But there is a lot of constructional boredom, several ugly "modern buildings" and - meanwhile - a few wonderful modern buildings. If you are not interested (like me) in the bustling activities and joie de vivre of its inhabitants - the big and small Ticos and Ticas - two travel days are enough.
Well worth seeing and highly recommended are the National Museum and the Museo de Arte Costarricense.
el barrio Amón, the urban district Amón
el Museo Nacional, the National Museum
The Museo Nacional de Costa Rica informs you about the geology, archeology, pre-columbian, religious, colonial and modern history of Costa Rica. You enter the museum through a huge hall with a glass roof - a fantastic butterfly garden - in which the visitor is buzzing with multitudes of exotic butterflies.

Museo de Arte Costarricense
Walking from the center (cathedral) to the Museo de Arte Costarricense at the large Sabana Park, it takes a good half hour. The detour is worthwhile!
el Hotel Aranjuez
... is an eco-friendly bed and breakfast hotel housed in five wooden houses from the 1930s. It offers authentic Costa Rican accommodation in a city oasis surrounded by tropical gardens. Each room is authentically furnished and equipped with a 32-inch flat-screen TV, hot water, a safe and a work desk.
And not only because of the gigantic delicious breakfast buffet you get only with very early booking a room.
The only problem: from the 19th Street (between Avs 11 and 13, in the barrio Aranjuez) it is almost 30 minutes walking distance to the city center (cathedral).
