Costa Rica (5) Santa Elena and the cloud forest region Monteverde

Here I am in Cañas. This route by bus was recommended to me by the owners of the lodge. It led from Curubandé with 3 stops - in Liberia, Cañas and Tilarán - to Santa Elena. That means change three times, waiting three times for the connection bus.

Here in Tilarán I waited 4 hours - in vain! - on the bus to Santa Elena. And here I have learned for 50 US $ the difference between el doce and el dos.

When buying the bus ticket for Santa Elena, I understood 2 o'clock as the departure time. The ticket seller, however, said - mumbling - 12 o'clock. If you do not speak Spanish well, both words sound extremely similar. When long after 2 o'clock my bus still did not come and I inquired, it was said that the bus had left at noon (12 o'clock) ... and that was the last one to Santa Elena. In the meantime, to make matters worse, it was pouring out of buckets. So I paid $ 50 for a scary adventurous taxi ride over narrow, blighted roads, across the mountains.

el Jardín de Mariposas

Housing more than 30 species of butterfly – including the luminescent blue morpho – in plant-filled enclosures, this small butterfly garden is a great spot for everyone. Visit in the morning to see plenty of fluttering. The garden is 150m east and 150m south of Centro Comercial El Pueblo, which can be reached on foot (about a 20- to 30-minute walk from downtown), by taxi or by bus.

The garden also includes a great insect area (museum) with the opportunity to be hands on with a tarantula, scorpion, and view the intricate life of the leaf cutter ant.

The Bat Museum

Designed to introduce visitors to the incredible world of bats, the Bat Jungle in Monteverde offers a world class bat exhibit where live bats fly through a simulated jungle environment. Guided tour takes about 45 minutes # 90 live bats of 8 species in an enclosure 17m (57ft) in length # Our bats fly, eat, socialize, nurse their babies and even give birth right before your eyes # Exhibit features a special ultrasonic microphone that allows visitors to hear bats echolocating (biosonar) and socializing in real time.
